Overview
E-TRAN Plus for PSS/E is an add-on to E-TRAN and is sold/licensed separately from E-TRAN.
Due to the complexity and large nature of some systems, it may not be feasible to retain the full AC system in PSCAD. In some studies, it may make sense to focus EMT modelling efforts to a smaller area but then interface with PSS/E software to dynamics for the rest of the AC system. This module is a hybrid simulation interface between PSCAD and PSS/E transient stability programs designed to address the above challenges.

Hybrid Simulation
Includes a supplementary set of E-TRAN models which allows network equivalents in PSCAD to communicate with a PSS/E transient stability time domain simulation.
Dynamic Equivalents in PSCAD
A hybrid approach allows to retain detailed PSCAD modelling in a specific area under study while retaining the machine dynamics from the PSS/E system equivalent when this may interact with the area under study.
Accurate models running in PSSE
Detailed PSS/E models that aren’t yet developed in PSCAD can be represented in the PSS/E dynamic simulation and interfaced through hybrid simulation for a PSCAD study when appropriate.
Allows simultaneous runs using both PSS/E and PSCAD and to interface models on both sides through exchange of terminal information. Basically, the PSCAD side system equivalent gets updated from PSS/E’s voltage, angle and frequency, and the PSS/E side gets updated from what happens in PSCAD.
A typical set up may include:
PSCAD models including detailed wind/solar models, HVDC/facts devices, etc...
PSS/E models representing the full AC system, including all modes of oscillation from nearby machines.
During the simulation the following occurs:
- The 2 programs run synchronously in time, allowing faults to be made on either side and affect the other.
- Voltage and current (with angle/frequency) from PSS/E is sent to PSCAD, where it is used to update equivalent voltage sources (in the system-equivalent).
- A DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) is used to extract positive sequence quantities from PSCADTM, which is transmitted to PSS®E and used to update a dynamic generator model.

Currently we support PSS/E versions 33,34,35,36, and continue to work in parallel to Siemens/PTI to support latest releases.
While the add-on doesn’t directly support simulation software other than PSS/E and PSCAD, co-simulation can often be used to “glue” together usually incompatible transient stability tools, i.e. different versions of PSS/E with PSCAD. Some advance techniques can enable hybrid simulation between other transient stability tools such as PSLF, contact us for more details.
