Company Profile

ELECTRANIX Corporation was established in 2000 as a Power Systems Consulting firm dedicated to providing high quality specialty engineering services and studies. It was formed by Dennis Woodford and Garth Irwin, who along with Dr. Ani Gole of the University of Manitoba were the principal developers of the world’s most popular electromagnetic transient program, PSCAD/EMTDC. Electranix has become known for excellence in simulation and studies work, as well as for the broad scope of knowledge available as support for power systems engineers.

Our Mission

Engineering Excellence

Engineering Excellence

Electranix now has more than 30 specialist engineers and computer scientists with deep experience in power systems and simulation.  We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of the power systems consulting industry as a trusted brand and partner to many of the largest utilities, ISOs, and developers around the world.  Our engineering studies and consulting services are grounded in decades of experience, but also tackle the latest emerging power system needs such as large data center loads, high IBR penetration, and grid-forming technology.

Specialized Expertise

Specialized Expertise

We have a diverse expert team with a wide-ranging expertise, including standard development, HVDC and FACTs, renewable interconnection, custom model development, classical transient studies, series capacitor and SSO topics, protection, very large EMT models and system modeling frameworks, and many more.  Also, we love to train utilities and ISOs and share our knowledge with you!

Connections

Connections

We are proudly independent and over the last few decades have worked on thousands of projects for transmission providers, generator or load owners, manufacturers, and other consultants.  We are deeply embedded in industry groups such as the IEEE, Cigre, ESIG, and others. Take advantage of our extensive network of associates and partners, and let us help you get your problems solved.

Our Leadership Team

Dennis Woodford, P.Eng.

Director

Dennis joined the English Electric Company in 1966 and worked on variable speed drives and HVDC transmission in the UK until 1970. He completed a BE (Hons) from the University of Melbourne in Australia in 1966 and an M.Sc.(E.E.) at the University of Manitoba, Canada and joined Manitoba Hydro in 1972. There he worked in transmission planning of ac and dc EHV transmission and wrote the EMTDC algorithm.

Garth Irwin, P.Eng.

President

Garth joined the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre after graduating from the University of Manitoba, Canada in 1987. At the Centre, he undertook studies and projects including insulation coordination of HVDC transmission substations, subsynchronous resonance, and digital controls development.

Andrew Isaacs, P.Eng.

Vice-President

Andrew has been with Electranix since 2003. He currently specializes in renewable interconnections, weak grid and SSR/SSCI issues, as well as large scale EMT system modelling. Additional current efforts include specification and support for FACTs, training for utility planners, study team leadership, and expert witness support.
